Where Are The Almond Orchards In California

For those who love almonds—and we’re looking at you, hipsters—California is the place to be. The Golden State produces nearly 80 percent of the world’s supply of this tree nut, meaning you can’t throw a rock in certain parts of California without hitting an almond orchard (please don’t try). So where are these almond orchards? Throughout the Central Valley, which spans from Redding all the way down to Bakersfield. If you want to know exactly where to find them in order to get your almond fix straight from the tree, here are California’s top ten almond producing counties:

Fresno County

Fresno County is the top almond producing county in California, and it’s not even close. The county has over 100,000 acres of almond orchards, which is roughly a third of California’s total acreage. That makes Fresno County responsible for two thirds of the world’s almonds!

Stanislaus County

Stanislaus County is located in the San Joaquin Valley and is home to over 1,000 almond growers who produce over 6,000 acres of almond orchards. This makes Stanislaus County the largest almond producing county in California and one of the top five producers in the United States.

Kern County

• Kern County is also home to many other crops such as pistachios, olives, grapes and tomatoes as well as sheep and cattle ranches.

Merced County

Located in the heart of Central California’s San Joaquin Valley, Merced County is the second-largest producer of almonds in the state and fourth-largest producer in the United States. The county’s almond orchards account for $2 billion dollars worth of business each year.

Almonds are grown for their meaty interior and thin skins that are easily removed from their shells. They’re also used to make flour, oil, butter and even candy.

San Joaquin County

San Joaquin County is the most productive almond producing county in California and the third most productive in the United States. San Joaquin County has the most almond orchards in all of California, so you can be sure that any place you go will have plenty of places to spend your time.

Butte County

Butte County is located in the northernmost part of the state, bordering both the state of Nevada and the state of Oregon. The county seat is Oroville and it has a population of around 200,000 people. Its primary industries are agriculture and tourism.

Madera County

Madera County is home to over 100 almond orchards, making it the fifth largest producer of almonds in California. The almond industry is the largest employer in the county and contributes $4 billion to the state economy each year.

Madera County’s mild climate makes it an ideal place for growing almonds, which thrive on warm days and cool nights.

Kings County

Kings County is the second largest almond producer in the state, and it’s also the fourth largest agricultural county in California. Almond orchards are a staple of this region, which means that Kings County is a great place to visit if you’re an almond lover.

Almond trees take up about 10% of all plantings in Kings County and bear huge crops every year! If you want to see where these trees grow, just head down Highway 99 towards Hanford or Woodville – there’s plenty to see on this drive!

San Benito County

San Benito County is one of the fastest growing counties in California, and it’s also the third largest almond producer in the state. The county is located south of Monterey County, which has been a popular site for growing almonds since the 19th century.

Almond orchards cover nearly half of San Benito County’s total landmass and make up about 80% of its agricultural economy. The area has been known to produce some of California’s best-tasting almonds since they were first introduced there by Spanish missionaries in 1776. In addition to being delicious on their own, almonds can be used as an ingredient in many different recipes—including almond milk!

According to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, here are the top ten California counties in terms of almond production. They’re listed in order of production and also alphabetically, so you can find your county easily:

• Los Angeles County (includes Santa Barbara)
• Merced County
• Riverside County (includes San Bernardino)
