What’s The Average Weight Of A Chicken Breast
The metric system isn’t popular in North America, but we do get asked to use it from time to time. The most common situation is when you’re looking at a recipe and realize that the ingredients are measured by weight. How much does a chicken breast weigh? What about an ounce or a pound? It can be tricky to figure out how much to buy at the store if you have to wing it: How many chicken breasts should I get for dinner? Here are some numbers that will help you estimate what you need so your guests aren’t peckish after dinner:
You’re going to make a recipe, but the ingredients are measured by weight? It’s not something we deal with much in North America, but I’m glad we have the metric system for science and medicine. For those of us who learned the imperial system, here’s how to figure out how much to buy at the store.

For those of us who learned the imperial system, here’s how to figure out how much to buy at the store.
- Converting from Imperial to Metric: To convert from pounds (lbs) or ounces (oz) to grams (g), multiply your number by 0.4536. So for example, if you want 50g of butter that weighs 1lb 4oz:
50 / 0.4536 = 111 g butter
Or if it was 3 oz @ 2 tablespoons each: 15 / 2 = 7 tablespoons worth of butter
- Converting from Metric to Imperial: To convert grams into ounces, multiply by 28.349523125 (the number of grams per ounce). So let’s say you’ve got exactly one kilogram (1000g) of flour on hand and want 750 tablespoons worth: 1000 * 28.349523125 = 28499523125 which equals 2912 teaspoons or just under 2 cups
The average size of a chicken breast from the grocery store is about 8 ounces (226 grams). That’s pretty consistent with what I get when I buy them whole, but probably varies a little depending on breed, diet and age of the birds.

The weight of chicken breasts can vary quite a bit depending on how they were raised and cooked. For example, if you buy a roaster, it will probably weigh more than a broiler-fryer because it’s older and larger; this means that the average weight of chicken breasts from these two sources are different. And if those chickens have been fed differently (i.e., some organic versus conventional), then their weights could vary even more dramatically too!
A chicken sold as a “broiler-fryer” usually weighs between 2 and 4 pounds (0.90 – 1.81 kilograms).
The weight of a chicken sold as a “broiler-fryer” usually weighs between 2 and 4 pounds (0.90 – 1.81 kilograms). If you’re looking for an exact number, the average weight of a broiler-fryer is roughly 3 pounds (1.36 kilograms).
In other words, if you’re planning to eat your chicken breast raw, it’s probably best not to go with anything smaller than about 1 pound in size; otherwise you may end up with something so small that it doesn’t even fill up the space on your plate when cooked!
If you’re buying a whole bird at the butcher or farmers market, the average roasting chicken is between 5 and seven pounds (2.26 – 3.17 kilograms).
If you’re buying a whole bird at the butcher or farmers market, the average roasting chicken is between 5 and seven pounds (2.26 – 3.17 kilograms). A broiler-fryer weighs between two and four pounds (0.9 – 1.8 kilograms).
The weight of a chicken depends on its age, how much it eats, and how big its parents were when they were raised for food production. Chickens that are grown for meat are called broilers, while those used for egg production are known as layers or pullets (young hens).
Estimated weights are good enough if you need an approximation to help you plan meals or your shopping list.
If you need an exact weight, use a kitchen scale. If you’re making a recipe and want to know how much chicken breast to buy, use the weight of the ingredients as given in the recipe. If you don’t have access to a kitchen scale or are cooking for a crowd, estimated weights are good enough if you need an approximation to help you plan meals or your shopping list.
In most cases, I think a rough estimate is good enough. If you’re cooking for yourself, and you want to eat one chicken breast, it doesn’t matter so much if it’s 7 ounces or 10 ounces. If you’re cooking for your family, or to bring food to work as leftovers, then a pound of chicken will go farther than two pounds and still be too much if your family isn’t very big.
