Most cattle auctions in the southeast were not held on Wednesday due to COVID-19 concerns, leaving limited reports available.
Livestock producers in the Southeast were forced to alter their operations due to continuing concerns about COVID-19, a virus that can cause respiratory illness in cattle. On Wednesday, most cattle auctions in Kentucky and Tennessee were not held due to COVID-19 concerns, leaving limited reports available.
The virus is not a threat to people and typically only affects young animals who have not been vaccinated. According to the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), symptoms include nasal discharge, fever, coughing and difficulty breathing. If you suspect your animals have contracted this disease it is best to consult with your veterinarian as soon as possible so they can administer appropriate treatment or vaccinations before further testing is necessary.
