How to Tell if a Watermelon is Ripe and Ready to Eat
You can tell if a watermelon is ripe and ready to eat in four simple ways: by checking the stem, the color, the smell, and the weight.
- Check for a green or yellow stem. A ripe watermelon will have a green or yellow stem that has some give when you press on it with your thumb. If there’s no change in color or texture as you push on it, then your watermelon might be overripe. If there’s no change at all—or if your thumb goes right through—it could mean that your melon was picked too soon!
- Look at its flesh color. Watermelons should be mostly creamy yellow inside with either darker stripes (if they’re underripe) or white rings (if they’re overripe). The seeds should be light brown or tan too; if they’re dark brown instead of light brown, it means that the fruit isn’t very sweet anymore because all of its sugars have been used up by its growing process!
- Smell it! When farmers harvest their crops each year before selling them off into supermarkets nationwide (and overseas), one thing we always look for is whether those fruits smell “sweeter” than usual – meaning if there is any trace whatsoever left behind
How to Store Cut Watermelon
To keep cut watermelon fresh, place it in an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator. Cut watermelon should last for 3 to 4 days in the fridge.
To make sure that your cut watermelon lasts as long as possible, wrap it tightly with plastic wrap before storing it in an airtight container. Alternatively, you can use another type of plastic bag or sealable container (such as a Tupperware) for storing your fruit if you do not want to use plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Be sure that the packaging is sealed well before placing the package into your refrigerator so that there is no chance for oxygen or moisture from outside sources to come into contact with the fruit itself
What is the Shelf Life of Watermelon?
- Refrigerator: 1-2 weeks
- Cool, dry area: 4 weeks
- Freezer: 6 months
Overall, watermelon can last up to three days at room temperature or in the refrigerator. You can keep it longer if you’re able to store it properly. Make sure that your watermelon is stored in a dark place at room temperature and not exposed to direct sunlight because this will cause an unpleasant taste in your food.
