The History of Coney Island

The first time Europeans set foot on the shores of Coney Island was in 1624, when a Dutch ship made landfall. The area was named after Coni’s Island, the home of Chief Nyack of the Onondaga Nation.

The first settlers arrived in 1728 and built a small settlement called Purdytown on what is now Neptune Avenue. In 1792, Moses Hicks acquired approximately 130 acres of land on what is now Surf Avenue, and founded Coney Island as a summer resort for New Yorkers. The first amusement park, Steeplechase Park, opened in 1876.

In 1916, Mayor John Purroy Mitchel closed Steeplechase Park due to the outbreak of World War I and the popularity of new amusement parks in Chicago and Philadelphia. In 1919, Mitchel reopened Steeplechase Park with more rides and games and renamed it Coney Island Amusement Park.

The original wooden rides at Coney Island Amusement Park were replaced with steel coasters in 1929. The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway was completed in 1935, cutting off much of the island from the rest of Brooklyn. Coney Island saw its last major renovation in 1963 when Russell Simmons designed

How to Get to Coney Island

The quickest way to get to Coney Island is to take the A train to Stillwell Avenue. From there, take the free shuttle that runs between Stillwell and Sharky’s Beach. The shuttle will drop you off right at the entrance of the amusement park.
If you’re coming from Manhattan, you can also take the subway to Atlantic Avenue and then walk south on Atlantic. Or, if you’re coming from Brooklyn, you can take the subway to Fourth Avenue and then walk east on Fourth.
Otherwise, there are plenty of buses that go from all over Brooklyn and Queens that will drop you off right at the entrance of Coney Island.
