Australian Shepherd Weight Chart

If you are looking for the average weight of a purebred Australian Shepherd, you’ve come to the right place! For both male and female Aussies, the average weight falls between 35.5 and 37.5 kilograms (or 77 to 83 pounds). But don’t worry: if your Aussie is a little bit outside this range, it’s probably nothing to worry about! While there’s no official “giant” variety of the Australian Shepherd (like there is for other breeds, such as German Shepherds), some Aussies can grow quite large: up to 23 kilograms (about 51 pounds). Here are some other frequently asked questions I get about my favorite dog breed’s weight.

Male/Female

Male Aussies are larger than females. Male dogs typically weigh more than their female counterparts, but this is not always the case. Males are taller than females, and their hair is longer. Males tend to be slightly more aggressive than females, though all Aussie puppies should be socialized early on so that they can interact well with other animals and people. They also have more muscle mass; a male Siberian Husky will weigh about the same as two or three adult Australian Shepherds!

Male Aussies are often more territorial than females as well; if there’s a threat in your yard or even just another dog walking down your street, it’s best for everyone involved if you let your male run interference between them instead of trying to do so yourself (unless you’re an experienced fighter). Additionally, males may bite harder when playing roughhouse games such as tug-of-war because they’re built differently from their female counterparts—they have heavier bones and stronger jaws!

Weight in pounds (lbs)

The pound, abbreviated lb, is a unit of mass in the imperial and United States customary systems. It is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms (or approximately 4.5 ounces). The pound is sometimes referred to as the ‘international pound’, although this name has been superseded by the kilogram. Many other countries have replaced their former pounds with new units to define mass, but they are still using the English word “pound.”

If you’re looking to the Australian Shepherd breed standard to help you determine weight ranges, be aware that it is possible for your dog to exceed the maximum weight allowed by breed standards. The Giant Australian Shepherd is one of three varieties recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and as such has its own set of guidelines. This variety of Aussie is considered to be tall and leggy, with a height range between 25 inches and 27 inches at maturity. Although this makes them quite large dogs in comparison with other varieties, their weight should still remain on par with other medium-to-large dog breeds within the same size range.

Giant Australian Shepherds can weigh between 60 pounds and 90 pounds at 2 years old or older, while those under 1 year old will fall somewhere between 30 pounds and 50 pounds unless they are significantly overweight or obese due to overfeeding or lack of exercise.[1]
