5 Gallon Bucket Plant Stand

This one is a fun one! If you’ve been following along on Instagram, you may have seen that my mom designed this plant stand for our spring refresh garden sessions. I thought it was so cute and ended up making two stands myself (the second one will be a spray paint project).

After finishing her first design, she decided to make a second version using the buckets upside down– and it’s great! Here’s how the first one came together. First I grabbed two 5 gallon buckets from The Home Depot (by the way, did you know you can order online and select in store pick up? Super convenient!). Since this stand is indoors, I didn’t worry about adding a drainage hole to the bottom of the bucket like you would for outdoors. You could use any color buckets you want, but I went with white so that they would match the pot holders on the outside of our house. It also goes nicely with our brickwork. Once they were painted, I let them dry overnight before filling them with soil and plants.

Ready to plant some plants? Great! Here are some tips for selecting the right plant stand for you.

  • Choose a color that complements your décor and allows you to see the floor beneath it.
  • Make sure it’s sturdy enough for its intended purpose, especially if you plan on placing it near a window or other perch with lots of natural light (which can put stress on any furniture).
  • Make sure there’s ample space between the bottom of your bucket and whatever surface or wall they’re going against; this prevents water spills from ruining anything nearby when watering time comes around again soon! You’ll also want space at the top so you can easily reach inside without breaking anything off accidentally while reaching down low–these things happen all too often when trying something new like this project because we tend not think safety first when trying new things out like this one here today.”

The idea behind the project was to make something pretty with just some basic carpentry skills and no power tools. The plants we used in this tutorial were from your local garden center or nursery—just whatever you like! This was actually one of my favorite things about the project: being able to customize it to suit whatever color scheme or style we wanted. You can choose any kind of bucket or mason jar too!

In addition to using 5 gallon buckets and mason jars as plant holders, you’ll also need paint brushes & rollers, a hammer & nails or screwdriver; if possible try using screws instead of nails since they’re easier when taking apart later on down the road.”

To make this plant stand, you’ll need:

  • Two 5-gallon buckets. These should be the same size, but they don’t have to match.
  • A potting mix (we used a premade one from Walmart)
  • Paint that is the same color as your bucket lids (or spray paint!)

Buckets are available in a variety of colors at The Home Depot: white, black, red and blue! They also come in different sizes so that you can find one that fits your plants perfectly. And if there’s not an exact match for what you need or if you’re looking for something with some extra capacity for bigger plants (like tomatoes) then no worries—The Home Depot offers multi-gallon containers as well!

You’ll also find buckets made from different materials like plastic or metal; choose whatever works best for your space and decorating preferences!

I found this recipe for a homemade 5 gallon bucket plant stand on Pinterest and thought it was perfect for us! We already had the buckets from when we moved here, and we liked that this project didn’t require any tools or paint brushes (since we don’t have many here yet). And since all of our pots are white too it was easy to match!

I just love this plant stand! I decided to put the painted buckets on the bottom so that the good looking ones would be up top. If you want to build your own– get inspired by my mom’s second version here.
